One of the tools provided to help is the UK Trades Confederation Members Letter of Introduction.

In addition to other vetting requirements, use of these letters is only permissible provided that members have supplied 3 or more customer references, of which we have been able to contact at least 2. 

Further references will be obtained on an on-going basis.

This is a very powerful sales tool. Used correctly they can secure a considerable amount of extra work. They are designed primarily for the construction and allied trades. You can simply attach one to each quote you send but these letters work extremely well when handed to your potential customer in person.
